I’d love to see if we could draft a list of shared best characterstics/best practices. Hayles’ comparative media studies might be one way to integrate into pre-existing programs.

Comment on General Discussion Session Proposal: Digital Humanities in a Community College Literature Class by Keri Sanburn Behre http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/09/26/general-discussion-session-proposal-digital-humanities-in-a-community-college-literature-class/#comment-20 Sat, 20 Oct 2012 05:11:00 +0000 http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/?p=113#comment-20 I’m not sure if this fits here or in a separate or concurrent session,
but it would be very useful to have a space to talk about the digital
humanities in small, teaching-focused institutions.

Comment on Building, Making, and Creating in the Humanities Classroom by Sara Q. Remember how tablets re-sparked the whole “content consumers vs. content creators” flurry? How much *building* do our physical campus buildings allow? Not just libraries, but classrooms, too. Out students should have room and encouragement to tinker and experiment. Will definitely look forward to soaking up the discussion for this one.

Comment on Discussion: Teaching with Critical Code Studies by Roger Whitson http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/10/18/discussion-teaching-with-critical-code-studies/#comment-13 Thu, 18 Oct 2012 02:42:00 +0000 http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/?p=201#comment-13 i don’t know why this didn’t post the first time. But I’d love to be part of a CCS session, maybe as a way to introduce how to teach digital literacy to students in composition courses. It’s one thing to offer (as programs like Georgia Tech do) advanced computational programming courses for CS majors or advanced graduate students. It’s probably another thing to investigate how something like CCS can transform notions of basic literacy.

Would you teach CCS in your freshman comp course? Further, how do you see it complementing more traditional literacies? I’d love to be part of this session.

Comment on Another vote for a working session(s) on portfolios for student learning by Robin Wharton http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/10/16/another-vote-for-a-working-sessions-on-portfolios-for-student-learning/#comment-11 Wed, 17 Oct 2012 13:05:00 +0000 http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/?p=185#comment-11 I would definitely be interested in participating in this session. I’ve taught with portfolios since I first began teaching first-year composition seven years ago, and I’ve recently started to integrate “riffs” on the traditional portfolio (e.g., collaborative class portfolio) in upper division classes. This semester, my students are collaboratively collecting poetry and their essays about the poems into a book, which they will then digitize. The process involves reflections about the poems and their essays, and their ongoing work on the project itself. One very teachable moment occurred when we started talking about what they wanted to do with their book–or what they hoped might be done with it–*after* the class was over. Like portfolios that cover more than one class’s worth of work, I think involving students in the creation of public/quasi-public artifacts and scholarly resources pushes them to consider the potential relevance of the artifacts they create in a broader learning context. The question is how to do this in a manner that respects their work, their privacy, and their intellectual property.

I just posted a proposal about student portfolios and interdisciplinary assessment that would probably tie in really well with these questions on multimodal work. I would love to hear more about this!

I am a medievalist and reearcher on late medieval cartography. I taught a class last spring on Cartography and Literature in which students created a GIS literary edition (among other things) We read Sebald’s RIngs of Saturn, I spoke at last year’s MLA on this topic various theoretical works, medieval works, THoreau. I am particularly interested in how can we integrate the spatial properties of GIS into literary studies and include students in DH projects that investigate these two fields? Love to talk with some other folks, and I would be glad to share my students’ project to get input. There is a good introduction in The Spatial Humanities that I could bring copies of as a starting point for discussion. Let’s organize a session!

Additionally I’ve been exploring possible ways to for collaboration with group projects in GE and google maps as well.

Comment on General Discussion Session Proposal: Digital Humanities in a Community College Literature Class by Robin Wharton http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/09/26/general-discussion-session-proposal-digital-humanities-in-a-community-college-literature-class/#comment-5 Tue, 16 Oct 2012 14:26:00 +0000 http://hybridpedagogy2012.thatcamp.org/?p=113#comment-5 This sounds like a relevant, useful session. Like you, I spend much of my time teaching in lower-division undergraduate and FYC classrooms, and I work hard to integrate digital humanities influenced projects into my syllabi. I’ve had success with Jesse Stommel’s Twitter essay: www.hybridpedagogy.com/Journal/files/Twitter_and_the_student2point0.html, Brian Croxall’s Google and SIMILE timeline: briancroxall.net/TimelineTutorial/TimelineTutorial.html, a public class wiki, and various projects using a hodge podge of markup technologies (including XML) to facilitate close reading. I would love to hear about what others have been doing, and the notes and ideas generated by this session could potentially be useful to a fairly broad audience beyond THATCamp Hybrid Ped.
